A dialogue within an epic

The Bhagavad Gītā appears within the Mahābhārata as a dialogue between Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa. Arjuna’s difficulty concerns action in a conflict involving teachers and relatives; the conversation develops into inquiry about the self, disciplined action, devotion and liberation. Its eighteen chapters form a connected argument, not merely a store of detachable sayings.

Three questions to carry

What makes an action binding? What kind of knowledge changes the understanding of the self? What does devotion ask of the person who acts? These questions can organize a first reading without deciding in advance that one theme cancels the others. Gītā 2.47 is a useful starting reference for discussing action and its fruits, but read its surrounding verses too.

A shared text, different readings

The IIT Kanpur collection offers access to textual and commentarial layers. Select a named translator and commentator, and preserve their attribution in notes. Advaita, Viśiṣṭādvaita and Dvaita interpretations should be compared as arguments with different commitments. No scriptural translation is reproduced here, and this introduction does not claim to settle the epic’s textual chronology.

Historical context

The dialogue belongs to a composite epic tradition. Composition and redaction require edition-specific historical scholarship.
