Historical setting

The UNESCO property describes thirty-four monasteries and temples at Ellora, excavated over a period it places broadly between the sixth and tenth centuries. Its Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments preserve distinct religious and artistic settings. Their proximity is historically significant, but does not make their theological positions identical.

Reading the place

Rock-cut architecture asks a visitor to think about excavation as well as construction. Compare a plan, a façade and the interior of a particular cave rather than treating the entire complex as one undifferentiated monument. The names and functions of individual spaces deserve their own references.

Scope of this record

The present record follows the World Heritage description. It does not assign every cave to a precise patron or year. Claims about particular ritual practices and the beliefs of historical communities require monument-specific research beyond this introductory landscape record.

Living significance
