Many texts, related questions
The Upaniṣads are a diverse body of texts associated with Vedic traditions. They investigate questions of self, ultimate reality, knowledge and liberation through dialogue, instruction and reflection. “Principal Upaniṣads” is a conventional selection, not the title of one original book or a guarantee that all of its works say the same thing.
A beginning with Īśā
The Īśāvāsya or Īśā Upaniṣad is associated with the Śukla Yajurveda and contains eighteen mantras. The linked Vedic Heritage resource provides its Sanskrit text. Its discussions of action, knowledge and the self invite close attention to contrasting terms and to the explanations offered by different commentators.
Keep the interpreter visible
A reading that identifies self and ultimate reality belongs to a particular interpretative argument; it is not the only possible Vedāntic account. Choose a named translation and keep its notes alongside the Sanskrit reference. Our introductory collection begins with Īśā while leaving room for separate records on Bṛhadāraṇyaka, Chāndogya, Kaṭha and other works.
Historical context
Vedic affiliations and the histories of individual Upaniṣads differ. This page does not assign one composition date to the collection.
