A collection of hymns
The Ṛgveda Saṃhitā is a collection of Sanskrit hymns transmitted within Vedic traditions. Its familiar Śākala arrangement contains ten maṇḍalas, or books. Hymns address deities including Agni, Indra and Soma; the collection should be approached as a varied body of poetry rather than a single systematic philosophical treatise.
Text and living transmission
The Vedic Heritage Portal presents recitations, textual resources and different arrangements of the collection. Oral transmission is part of the subject itself: an English translation alone cannot convey accent, metre or recitational practice. The collection also contains older and later textual layers; a precise date for every hymn is not established here.
A useful first reading
Begin with one identified hymn and record its maṇḍala, sūkta and verse. Ask who speaks, who is addressed and what ritual or poetic situation the translator proposes. Compare a translation with its introduction before treating a hymn as evidence for a later school of thought. This is an introductory route into the collection, not a critical edition.
Historical context
A layered Vedic collection preserved through textual and oral traditions; individual hymn dates are not assigned here.
