Historical setting
Hampi preserves the monumental landscape of the Vijayanagara capital. UNESCO’s account places its major temples and palaces within the development of the city between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The property is a landscape of many buildings, routes and settings; one marker cannot represent all of it.
Reading the place
Approach the site through the relation between temple complexes, water, settlement and rocky terrain. A photograph of the Vittala stone chariot is a useful beginning, but it should not be mistaken for a complete account of the city or its religious life.
Scope of this record
This record summarizes the UNESCO property description. Specific narratives, inscriptions and claims about individual shrines require their own references. Related links indicate a thematic reading route rather than evidence that every structure belongs to one theological school.
Living significance
Approach the site through the relation between temple complexes, water, settlement and rocky terrain. A photograph of the Vittala stone chariot is a useful beginning, but it should not be mistaken for a complete account of the city or its religious life.
