A first vocabulary of Jyotiṣa
Celestial study, calendrical practice and textual interpretation kept in context.
Introductory source-based synthesis. External references were consulted for the stated scope; specialist peer review is not claimed.
A discipline with changing scope
Jyotiṣa is one of the six Vedāṅgas. The Vedic Heritage account introduces its concern with the timing of ritual and identifies the text associated traditionally with Lagadha. Later astronomical and astrological literature extends into different subjects; those developments should not all be projected back into the earliest material.
Three kinds of statement
Keep an astronomical calculation, a classical interpretative rule and a contemporary personal reading distinct. The Rashtriya Panchang provides an institutional example of documented calendrical calculation. Its astronomical data does not by itself validate a prediction about a person’s life.
A small reading notebook
Begin by identifying the source’s date or edition, terminology and purpose. Record a definition with its context, then follow the linked entries on grahas, rāśis, nakṣatras, bhāvas and pañcāṅga. The current observatory is a learning collection; birth charts, personal interpretation and consultation are planned capabilities rather than active services.
