Texts and the history of celestial study
An introduction to choosing sources for Jyotiṣa research.
Introductory source-based synthesis. External references were consulted for the stated scope; specialist peer review is not claimed.
Identify which branch you are studying
The Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa is associated traditionally with Lagadha and with ritual timing. Later Jyotiṣa sources discuss a broader range of astronomical and interpretative subjects. A reading list should identify those differences rather than treating every work as one timeless manual.
A title is only the beginning
For a classical text, record the edition, language, translator, commentary and numbering. For a contemporary ephemeris or panchang, record its calculation conventions. A university course may introduce traditional vocabulary while making claims that require independent assessment; institutional publication does not make every predictive assertion scientifically established.
Build a source trail
Start with the Vedic Heritage overview for the Vedāṅga setting and the Rashtriya Panchang for a modern documented calculation practice. Keep source notes tied to specific passages. The archive will expand its classical bibliography through identified editions and verified references. It does not currently offer an unreviewed list of manuscript titles as though each had been examined.
